Just last month we announced some big news about Volvo Cars and Polestar, and hot off that news, Volvo Cars has dropped another big one on us: starting in 2019, every vehicle Volvo Cars launches will have an electric motor. This marks a huge shift for the Scandinavian automaker and the automotive sector as a whole.

Between 2019 and 2021, Volvo Cars expects to launch five fully electric cars, three under the Volvo banner and two under the standalone Polestar banner. Reading the tea leaves, it seems Volvo is the first of the major auto manufacturers to demonstrate its commitment to a sustainable-energy future in such clearly defined terms and actions.

“This is about the customer,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive. “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish. This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car. Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1m [1 million] electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it.” —from a July 5, 2017 Volvo Cars Press Release

This announcement is part of Volvo Car’s commitment to minimizing environmental impacts and creating the cities of the future. Volvo Cars has previously stated it plans to have a million electric vehicles on the road by 2025, and it seems it’s about to put its money behind that goal. Here at Betten Imports, we’re excited to see what the future holds, but with Volvo Cars leading the charge, one thing is for sure: the future looks bright!
