Most fans of the Volvo lineup know about Polestar, the formerly-sub-brand of Volvo meant for performance driving, which Volvo formally acquired in 2015—but most Volvo fans are probably used to seeing that electric blue color and the Polestar name on special edition Volvo models and on the track. That will all change relatively soon, however; since Volvo Cars has just announced that Polestar will be establishing its own, standalone car brand focused on electrification, performance driving, and, more specifically, the marriage of the two!

This step marks another big leap forward in Volvo’s quest toward electrification, which it laid out in its Volvo Vision 2020. When it finally debuts, Polestar will be offering Polestar-branded vehicles, no Volvo badging in sight! This endeavor will be led by Thomas Ingenlath, erstwhile Senior Vice President Design at Volvo, who will soon ascend to the position of Chief Executive Officer at Polestar, and Jonathan Goodman—formerly Senior Vice President Corporate Communication at Volvo Cars—who will join Polestar as Chief Operating Officer. Both leaders have decades of experience in the industry and will be instrumental to leading Polestar to even greater electrified successes as its own branded line.
“Polestar will be a credible competitor in the emerging global market for high performance electrified cars. With Polestar, we are able to offer electrified cars to the world’s most demanding, progressive drivers in all market segments.” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. —from a June 21, 2017 Volvo Car USA Press Release
Here at Betten Imports, we’ve long been fans of Polestar racing, and it’s exciting to think that Polestar could soon be a household name just like Volvo. There’s no telling when we can expect Polestar to start moving vehicles off a production line, but boy howdy, are we excited to see what they’ll come up with. The evolution of Volvo has and always will be incredible to watch, but even more fun to drive, so if you’re looking for a reliable and capable luxury ride, it never hurts to check out our current Volvo inventory.
